2024 has not been kind to anime and manga fans. First, we were hit with the passing of beloved manga creator Akira Toriyama. Then came the summer, which saw the passing of legendary voice actors. Now, as we enter fall, anime fans are devastated by the news of Emi Shinohara's passing. Known for her roles as Makoto Kino (Sailor Jupiter) in Sailor Moon, Kushina Uzumaki in the Naruto series, and Presea in Magic Knight Rayearth, among others, the voice actress left her mark on the industry. The anime world took to social media to pay tribute to another famous voice actress.
While Anime News Network typically presents the voice actors' messages in alphabetical order, we felt it was important that the first message be from Shinohara's husband, Hiroshi Watari.

There have been a lot of swallowtail butterflies flying around me lately.

I worked with Emi Shinohara-chan on the NHK program Hitori de Dekiru Mon as the Ikenai Sisters.♪ All the members of the Ikenai Sisters—Satoko Yasunaga-san, Satoko Kitō-san, and Emi Shinohara-san, except me—have traveled to even greater places…😢
This photo is from that event, they were both young then, rest in peace.
Shinohara's work in the anime industry left an indelible mark. It's sad that she passed away, but her spirit lives on in some of her contemporaries. And she will always be with us as she fires Sailor Jupiter's Chou Crème Thunder…I mean Supreme Thunder.
