Death Note fans can’t help but see how surprisingly similar Light Yagami and Spongebob are.
An Anime-focused Facebook page called “Anime Feels” recently showed how the pair appear to be wearing the same outfit to their followers, displaying images of the two characters side by side. Viewers quickly realize that the comparison is correct, as Light’s brown jacket and red tie resemble those worn by the iconic yellow sponge. Death Note fans reacted with a mixture of amusement and horror, claiming that they “couldn’t help but notice” the similarity.
Light Yagami’s Evil Reputation in Anime and Manga
Unlike the hilarious Spongebob, Light Yagami’s character is mired in violence and death. In Tsugumi Ohba’s popular Death Note manga, Light Yagami embarks on a crusade to eliminate criminals from the world while evading detection and arrest by the famous detective, L. The obsession of Light about creating a perfect, crime-free world eventually evolved into a desire to rule over human civilization like a god. Due to his insane intentions, many viewers consider Light Yagami to be one of the most evil characters in all of the media.
Death Note becomes a huge hit of Shōnen Jump
Ohba’s Death Note manga ran in Weekly Shōnen Jump in December 2003, until ending in May 2006. As of November 2022, the series has sold over 30 million copies worldwide. . In August 2006, Shueisha published a light novel adaptation of the manga, Death Note Another Note: The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases. Written by Nisio Isin, this novel serves as a prequel to the main series, telling L’s work on the famous murder case while delving deeper into the character’s past. Madhouse’s Death Note anime premiered in October 2006, spanning 39 episodes until the series’ conclusion in June 2007. Nippon Television also produced a live-action series of Death Note, part The first was released in June 2006.
Netflix’s Death Note Live-Action Adaptation
Death Note’s most recent adaptation was Netflix’s 2017 live-action film. Directed by Adam Wingard, this film adapts Ohba’s origin story, following Light Turner (Nat Wolff) as he tries to create an ideal world using a title book. Last year, Netflix announced that it would once again tackle Death Note, only this time as a live-action series rather than a movie. This new show is directed by Matt and Ross Duffer, the creators of the iconic Stranger Things franchise. Netflix also clarified that the series will be a brand new adaptation unrelated to the live-action film. Cast, crew and release date information has yet to be announced.
Death Note is available to stream on Netflix. Spongebob Squarepants airs daily on its home network, Nickelodeon.
