Deadline reported on Tuesday that Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service will start running ads to subscribers in the US, excluding Guam, the US Virgin Islands and the Mariana Islands on the 29th. January. It will begin running ads in the UK, Germany and Canada on February 5.
It will run ads in France, Italy, Spain, Mexico and Australia by the end of 2024.
There will be no advertising on purchased or rented content.
The company is offering an ad-free subscription tier for an additional $2.99 per month on top of the basic subscription fee.
Company representatives claim that the streaming service aims to “have significantly fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers.” The company further stated that advertising revenue will allow it to continue investing in content.
Amazon has increased the annual subscription price for its Amazon Prime service from $119 to $139 and the monthly subscription price from $12.99 to $12.99. $14.99 in February 2022. At the time, the company announced that it planned to triple the number of original shows and movies launching on its Amazon Prime Video streaming service.
