new cartoon suzume is director Makoto Shinkai’s latest hit in Your Name, and it was already one of the most successful animated films of all time, even before it debuted in English on April 14. The cast of the English dub features plenty of voices fans can recognize from other works, simply because of their prolific careers. Here’s an overview of who will voice whom in the blockbuster animated movie, as well as some of their most notable previous roles that fans may remember them with.
Nichole Sakura (Suzume Iwato)
Protagonist Suzume Iwato, voiced in the Japanese version by Nanoka Hara, will be voiced in English by Nichole Sakura. Nichole Sakura is known for her role on the NBC sitcom Superstore, where she played Cheyenne for six seasons. She also has several voiceover credits, on shows from OK KO: Let’s Be Heroes to Star Wars: Visions to Robot Chicken, although this appears to be her first time voicing an anime.
Josh Keaton (Sota Munakata)
Sota Munakata, a strange man who seems to know what’s going on with the rifts, is voiced by Hokuto Matsumura in Japanese and Josh Keaton in English. Keaton is an excellent voice actor with hundreds of credits to his name. His most recent anime credit is Tiger & Bunny, where he voices him as Thomas, although he may be best known for voicing Shiro in the 2016 reboot of Voltron: Legendary Defenders. Josh Keaton has also voiced Marvel characters in numerous cartoon and video game appearances, most notably as Peter Parker in The Spectacular Spider-Man 2008. Gamers may know Josh Keaton more as Revolver Ocelot from Metal Gear Solid 3.
Jennifer’s Sun Bell (Iwato Tamaki)
Tamaki Iwato, played by Eri Fukatsu in the Japanese dub, is Suzume’s aunt, and will be played by Jennifer Sun Bell in the English dub. Players may recognize her from Genshin Impact, where she voices several NPC characters in the Inazuma region. She also played the villain Tess in Need for Speed Unbound. Jennifer Sun Bell mainly does voice work for Korean dramas with English dubs, including Rookie Cops and Extraordinary Attorney Woo.
Roger Craig Smith (Minoru Okabe)
Minoru Okabe, Tamaki’s co-worker, is voiced in Japanese by Shota Sometani and English by Roger Craig Smith. A veteran of the voice acting industry, Roger Craig Smith has hundreds of credits, since 1989. He may be best known for his role as the iconic Ezio Auditore in Assassin’s Creed, as well as voiced Sonic the Hedgehog since 2010, including the Sonic Boom television series. Anime fans may know him as Shinji Hirako Visored from Bleach, or Deidara from Naruto.
Amanda C. Miller (Rumi Ninomiya)
Rumi Ninomiya is a bar owner who points Suzume in the right direction and is voiced in Japanese by Sairi Ito and in English by Amanda C. Miller. Another excellent voice actor, Amanda C. Miller portrays the most popular Boruto character in the Boruto: Naruto Next Generations anime. She also voices Sailor Jupiter in Sailor Moon Eternal and Sailor Moon Crystal, as well as Toshiya Miike in Your Lie in April.
Rosalie Chiang (Chika Amabe)
Chika Amabe, another local supporting Suzume, is voiced in Japanese by Kotone Hanase and in English by Rosalie Chiang. Rosalie Chiang is a relatively new face in the voice-over field, but she made headlines with her star role in the 2022 Pixar film Turning Red.
Allegra Clark (Tsubame Iwato)
Tsubame Iwato, Suzume’s deceased mother, is voiced by Kana Hanazawa in Japanese and Allegra Clark in English. Allegra Clark is another industry veteran, with over a hundred credits to her name. More recently, she played Dorothea and Shamir in Fire Emblem: Three Houses, as well as Noel Niihashi in the Burn the Witch spin-off Bleach. She also played Jinyu in FLCL Progressive and Pitohui in Sword Art Online Alternative.
Orange Clarke (Hitsujiro Munakata)
Hitsujiro Munakata, Sota’s grandfather, is voiced in Japanese by Matsumoto Hakuo and in English by Cam Clarke. Cam Clarke is a voice legend who has had a very long history in the industry, with his first big role as Leonardo in the 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated film. He portrayed Kaneda in the dub. original Akira, Corrin from Fire Emblem Fates, Kratos Aurion from Tales of Symphonia, and frequently voices The Lion King’s Simba in side story material, such as Kingdom Hearts.
Joe Zieja (Tomoya Serizawa)
A friend of Sota, Tomoya Serizawa, is voiced by Ryunosuke Kamiki in Japanese and Joe Zieja in English. Joe Zieja is best known for starring as Claude in Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Kazutora Hanemiya in Tokyo Revengers.
With a stacked cast, the English dub for suzume must provide fans with a high-quality dub of the film that has proven to be hugely popular outside of the United States.
