When Ash protects Pikachu in the first episode of the anime against the Spearow army, the massive explosion from the lightning-charged Thunder Shock attack puts Ash in a coma.
Fans theorize that after this event, there was a change in the setting, and things started to get more cheerful. The protagonist's dream also explains why Team Rocket always fails in their efforts.
