Gaming is for entertainment and certainly, not everyone has the hobby of playing games alone. Basically, the most attractive point of online games is the creation of an environment that connects people, creating relaxing and interesting moments for everyone. Therefore, it is not strange that everyone wants to have teammates to stand side by side. However, we cannot always find suitable in-game friends. But this will probably be somewhat relieved in the future, through a new AI project from Google.
Accordingly, Google is using AI based on DeepMind with the aim of creating the ultimate virtual collaboration friend for all gamers. Notably, this is not a challenge for players to overcome. Instead, this AI will act as a gamer that can learn, follow verbal instructions, and understand the virtual world in which it exists. Instead of acting like the hard-coded AI adversary or bot we’ve been accustomed to for decades, Google’s SIMA (the name for this AI) promises to deliver a more natural environment. and a human-like gaming companion.
It is known that Google itself has also cooperated with eight studios to test its SIMA model in games including Valheim, Goat Simulator 3 and No Man’s Sky. Essentially, these are open world titles chosen to teach SIMA to learn general gaming skills. The current version of SIMA is capable of performing about 600 basic skills, including navigation, object interaction, and menu bar use.
The initial results look promising. Google said a briefly trained SIMA performed extremely well in games that were nearly indistinguishable from normal gamers. Although this is only the first stage, many people are very excited about the prospect of SIMA becoming popular, which will help gamers’ games become more lively. But nonetheless, there are still some concerns that the number of real players will gradually be replaced by AI, and create many problems afterward.
