Fans got a glimpse of what one of the Devil Fruits will look like in Netflix’s upcoming One Piece live adaptation.
Posted on Twitter, the photo shows Monkey D. Luffy’s Gomu Gomu no Mi in a box with the Marines logo engraved on the padlock. The unique Devil Fruit allows the future Pirate King to stretch his limbs and body like rubber, and recent chapters of Eiichiro Oda’s manga have revealed that there are many hidden secrets about Gomu Gomu no Mi.
The live-action based on the beloved manga by Eiichiro Oda will premiere on the streaming platform at the end of August. Iñaki Godoy plays Monkey D. Luffy in Netflix’s One Piece alongside Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp and Taz Skylar as Sanji. A full trailer was released at this year’s San Diego Comic showcasing the live-action version of the first Pirate King, Gol D. Roger.
Netflix’s One Piece adaptation has a big budget
Netflix poured a really huge amount of money into their One Piece adaptation, with each episode having a budget of $18 million. According to Gibson, the investment has paid off. In particular, the actor praised the film’s talented special effects team, explaining how he was most excited for fans and viewers to see the Sea Kings in live-action. “Oh my God. I mean, sea monsters are one of my favorites. They killed it with special effects on the sea monster. The action, the action is really good,” he said.
Of course, One Piece fans have more to get excited about than just the quick launch of the Netflix series. Most notably, Crunchyroll has revealed One Piece Film: Red and two other films in the franchise will soon be available to stream in both English dubbed and subtitled versions on the platform. Film Red depicts the events of Luffy’s reunion with his childhood friend Uta, who is also the estranged daughter of Red-Haired Shanks.
Furthermore, many new One Piece collections are available for pre-order. This includes a two-in-one figurine representing a more relaxed moment during Luffy’s training under the guidance of Silvers Rayleigh that retails for $433, and a towering, limited-edition statue of the Desert King, Sir Crocodile. Retailing for $974, this item is directly related to the former Warlord’s Suna Suna no Mi Devil Fruit.
VIZ Media distributes Oda’s manga in North America, and Toei Animation’s One Piece anime can be found on Crunchyroll.
