2024 can be considered a turbulent year for the world gaming village with countless phenomena. It is not the familiar series like Final Fantasy, Call of Duty that continue to dominate, but instead, there is the rise of brands that appear for the first time such as Palworld, Helldivers 2 and especially Black Myth: Wukong.
It wouldn't even be an exaggeration to say that up until now, Black Myth: Wukong has almost completely overshadowed the rest of the year's games and become the center of attention.
Since its launch, the game has broken countless records for the number of concurrent players on Steam, and it seems that after nearly a month, Black Myth: Wukong still shows no signs of stopping. Recently, according to the latest statistics, Black Myth: Wukong was the most downloaded PlayStation Store game in August in North America, Japan, and Europe, and if it continues to grow at this rate.
Black Myth: Wukong is likely to be the best-selling new video game of 2024, although it will face stiff competition in the coming months from the blockbuster Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.
Most years, Call of Duty is the best-selling game, but there are exceptions. Whenever Rockstar decides to release a new title, it's usually the best-selling project. In 2023, Hogwarts Legacy broke that order, and gamers are surely hoping that Black Myth: Wukong can do the same. One downside to Black Myth: Wukong is that it's only available on PC and PS5, while Black Ops 6 is a cross-gen game that's also available on Xbox platforms. Black Myth: Wukong is expected to launch on Xbox at some point, but there are no plans to bring it to PS4 or Xbox One.
Regardless, there's no denying that Black Myth: Wukong has been a phenomenon of the year. It'll be interesting to see how this upstart competes with a long-standing blockbuster like Call of Duty.
