Franky said in chapter #14
One of the The most famous rule of espionage is that spies should not be involved to anyone, be it a colleague, an informant, or worst of all, one's target. Even Franky, Loid's trusted informant, seems to be familiar with this golden rule, which applies equally well to him despite his constant efforts to find find a date.
I told you once – you have to keep your emotions out of this. If you value your life, never trust anyone. That's just the way people like you and I have to live.
—Franky Franklin
There is no doubt that Loid knows this rule well and logic dictates that the Forger family is just his cover for Operation Strix. However, Spy x Family often finds Loid trying to distinguish the blurred line between his emotions and his mission. As such, one would assume that Franky's reminders are justified, although fans would certainly like to see Loid continue to bond with the Forger family and his new personality.
9 “I want to be a better mother to that girl.”
Yor said in chapter #7
Although there is sometimes doubt as to whether Loid cares for the Forger family beyond Operation Strix, there is a strong bond formed early on between Anya and Yor. Even though she doesn't know Anya's true story yet, Yor quickly became extremely protective of his new responsibility and clearly cared for her deeply even though their family was a farce.
I know this family only has appearances. But… I still feel… I want to be a better mother to that girl.
—Yor Forger
Yor's desire to be a better mother to Anya may stem from the fact that she lost herself when she was young. Yor was forced to raise Yury on her own after their parents died in the war and most likely sympathized with Anya on the matter. While Loid's loyalties are also slowly but surely shifting, the healthy bond between Anya and Yor is sure to grow even stronger as Spy x Family's story progresses.
8 “There is nothing more elegant than the precious luxury of youthful friendship!”
Henderson said in chapter #39
One of the many running gags in the series is Professor Henderson's obsession, admiration, and desire for luxury in all areas of life. Although often giving humorous retorts, Professor Henderson is clearly quite wise and often imparts his profound wisdom to Anya and her classmates at Cecile Hall.
One of all Great insight from Professor Henderson seen in chapter #39 as he observes Damian relaxing with his friends and enjoying his childhood to the fullest possible. Having gone through difficult times himself, Henderson is certainly right when he asserts that there is nothing more precious and elegant than carefree childhood friendships. In fact, this could even be a reference to Henderson's friendship with Martha in the past, which was fleshed out in his recently revealed backstory.
7 “Hope for marriage? The joy of ordinary life? Those things went with my identification papers in the trash the day I became a spy.”
Loid said in chapter #1
As seen from his backstory, Loid threw away his old identity when he became Twilight. His real name is never revealed to readers and as one specific quote from chapter #1 proves, Loid even threw away all hope of having a normal life when he became a spy. . That said, despite our best efforts, Loid gradually enjoys the little joys of his new fake family.
Thoughts of Yor and Anya often cloud Loid's judgment, and he is seen doing everything in his power to maintain a facade on multiple charges. Unbeknownst to himself, Loid had actually begun to find comfort in the Forger family, as seen in the Cruise Adventure arc, where Loid was seen enjoying a vacation with Yor and Anya. Although parenthood brings continued challenges, Loid has also certainly grown attached to Anya and will certainly find it difficult to let go of his new family when Operation Strix finally ends.
6 “When you point a knife at someone, you won't complain when they point it back at you.”
Yor said in chapter #53
A defining moment in Yor's character in Spy x Family occurs during the Cruise Adventure Arc when Yor is forced to face a group of assassins as powerful as her. During the battle, one of the assassins confronts Yor for killing nearly all the other assassins, calling her heartless. However, Yor claimed that she was simply returning the favor and doing her job.
After the battle, Yor was brought to the brink of death and almost gave up, ready to accept her fate when the thought of family, both real and fake, urged her to continue fighting. Yor remembers the reason she became an assassin was to protect the fragile peace between nations and prevent further unnecessary tragedies. Thus, the scene and quote are quite important to explaining Yor's motive for murder and makes it clear that she is not the ruthless killer she appears to be.
5 “Papa is the world's biggest liar. But… he is a great liar.”
Anya said in chapter #1
One of the running gags of Spy x Family is Anya's ability to see through people's lies, especially when it comes to Yor and Loid. This makes for some particularly funny interactions as the adults warn Anya not to lie despite being the best liars themselves. Loid is most easily guilty of this and continually weaves intricate webs of lies wherever he goes, leading Anya to consider him the world's biggest liar.
Thanks to Anya's mind-reading abilities, she of course sees through Loid's numerous lies from the start, although she also quickly realizes what a great spy he is. Even though he may be a liar Anya clearly admires Loid and her admiration is easy to see right from chapter #1.
4 “Creating a world where children don't need to cry… That's the whole reason… I became a spy in the first place.”
Loid said in chapter #1
Like Yor, Loid also witnessed the horrors of war firsthand and did everything in his power to ensure the tragedies he experienced were not repeated. The entire goal of Operation Strix was to maintain peace between Ostania and Westalis and while Anya was only part of the mission, Loid soon realized that it would be difficult. counterintuitive to endanger an innocent girl as part of his mission.
Mistakes from the beginning endangered that child. How did I not see that? Creating a world where children don't need to cry… That's the whole reason… I became a spy in the first place.
—Loid Impersonator
Loid gets a reality check when Anya is kidnapped by one of his targets and becomes much more careful after the incident, ensuring Anya is never in danger due to his secret identity as Twilight. Furthermore, Loid's true mission of creating a world where children don't cry takes on even more significance as Spy x Family finally delves into Loid's own childhood and tragic origins.
3 “I apologize for intruding, but… may I have the honor of taking your life?”
Yor said in chapter #2
According to the character introduction, the appearance of Princess Thorn, Yor's alter ego, is one of the most memorable moments in the series. In contrast to her usual clumsiness, Yor carries out her duties as Princess Thorn with the utmost grace and charm and one particular quote early on in the series makes matters worse. The problem comes sooner.
In the now famous scene, Yor carries out his first on-screen assassination after politely apologizing and asking permission to kill his target. The subtle smile on Yor's face and the carnage that followed portrays Yor as a cold-blooded killer. It's true that this is only a one-time appearance in the series, but the scene and the quote that accompanies it perfectly conveys how dangerous Yor is now that she's not Anya's mother.
2 “Knowledge is… a swollen chihuahua?”
Said by Anya in chapter #26
Anya's struggle with language never gets old, nor does it get any less funny despite its frequent occurrence. While Anya has many funny quotes in Spy x Family, there's one in particular that stands out. In chapter #26, Yuri tries to tutor Anya, and the entire scene is completely humorous, perfectly demonstrating the unique humor that never misses the point of the series. Not surprisingly, Anya does one of her signature combos when Yuuri tries to tell her that “knowledge is power,” which Anya somehow overhears and misinterprets as “knowledge is a swollen chihuahua.”
Although it seems pretty meaningless in English, this line is actually a pretty impressive localization of the original Japanese pun. In the original, Yuri says “chi wa chikara” which is translated quite similarly to the English version; however, in Japanese, Anya hears this as “chiwawa chikara” thus explaining the word chihuahua.
1 “Ignorance is not happiness. Ignorance is weakness. Ignorance is sin.
Said by Loid in chapter #62.3
Although Spy x Family is primarily a lighthearted family sitcom, it also serves as a poignant commentary on the horrors of war and its lasting effects. While Westalis and Ostania are currently in the midst of the Cold War, the scars of the past conflict between the countries can be seen on almost every character in Spy x Family, even Anya.
Many people are still unaware of the scale of destruction that a war can bring, some even believe that war cannot affect them as Loid did in his youth. However, as Loid says in chapter #62.3, such ignorance is not bliss, despite what popular idioms may claim. Loid's words are easily one of the most evocative quotes in the series and prove that Spy x Family can gradually move from comedy to more complex, nuanced themes as the story progresses.
