Warning! Contains reveal for Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 219!Although Jujutsu Kaisen has pushed Shonen Jump’s age ratings in the past, one of its recent chapters has gone so far as to become a big deal for future anime adaptations. Mangaka Gege Akutami has never been shy about showing more graphic scenes than a typical Shonen series, but this is mostly about gore and violence. His latest chapter pushes boundaries in a much different way.
Chapter #219 of Jujutsu Kaisen tells the story of Yorozu’s past during the time of the ancient witches. She seemed so carefree, roaming around naked before a waiter appeared and told her that Sukuna wanted to see her. Then she put on a cape and went to see the King of Curses. Upon seeing him, she throws herself at Sukuna and is raped by one of his followers. After being thrown back, she defiantly announced that she would be the one to stay by Sukuna’s side, before collapsing from her injuries. But in that statement’s panel, her gown was bare and her full frontal nudity was displayed without any censorship.
Jujutsu Kaisen’s Nudity Is Unacceptable
Of course, the art style of Jujutsu Kaisen is the only thing that makes this scene even fit for a youth magazine. Jujutsu Kaisen and its creators are often criticized for the manga’s crude style and lack of detail, but it often gives the series a gritty fighting momentum that sets it apart from other manga. On this occasion, Gege’s controversial style also prevents the reader from seeing too many details about Yorozu’s body. However, Mappa’s excellent anime adaptation of Jujutsu Kaisen took an opposite approach, using a much more detailed style. It looks like they’ll continue to use this style for future arcs, as it’s fully shown in the new trailer for the second season of Jujutsu Kaisen. This usually helps to enhance the source content of the anime but of course, when adapting this scene, problems will arise as it will be very unsuitable for young audiences.
Unfortunately for Mappa, this scene is too important for Yorozu’s character to be overlooked. While it is unclear whether the wound Yorozu received here was what ultimately killed her, the fact that she still loved Sukuna after it shows her passionate devotion to her. for him. This then makes the “gift” she gave him at the end of their Culling Game battle all the more meaningful. In addition, her nudity shows how little she cares about social norms and how others think of her. All of these are important parts of her personality that would be lost if the scene were presented in a different way.
Jujutsu Kaisen’s Manga Can Go Where Anime Can’t
Of course, Mappa could always just use censor bars or a collage to cover up Yorozu’s nudity in a non-lethal way, and this is probably what they’ll do when they finally adapt the scene. However, this chapter reveals an interesting advantage that the manga of the series has over the anime adaptation. While Jujutsu KaisenGege’s manga art can look crude, it allows Gege to depict things that are normally forbidden in Shonen manga, making anime very difficult to adapt.
