The most accepted theory is that when Kiku bit Mahiru, she turned into a human while Mahiru turned into a vampire. Since vampires can’t stay in the sunlight, Mahiru begins to disintegrate while Kiku’s age starts to catch up with hers and she dies of old age.
Now that this love story has had a tragic end, Kou and the others will have to carry on with their lives as Kiku and Mahiru wished. Kou has returned from his adventure and will tell everyone about the incident he witnessed in the next chapter “welcome back”.
Yofukashi no uta chapter 164 “Curse”: Summary
This chapter continues after Mahiru and Kiku went to watch the sunrise and ended in tears. We see the first meeting between Kiku and Mahiru and how they got to know each other. Kiku was walking on the street when he suddenly heard a call for an ambulance because there was an accident nearby.
Kiku arrived at the scene and inquired about the matter when she discovered that it appeared that a child had been hit by a car for running outside. The boy’s mother cried when she saw her son’s condition but the boy’s brother stood in the distance with an expressionless face. People around the area expressed their support for the family.
Kiku recognized his younger brother as a child. She walked up to him and gave him an umbrella and said he would catch a cold if he was in the rain. It was just a whim but Kiku wanted to do something nice for once. The boy Mahiru asked Kiku a very random question when people die, do they become more important than those who are still alive?
Kiku is startled but Mahiru continues saying why is his mother only talking about his dead brother when he is still here? Kiku asked him to wait while she thought of an answer to such a strange question. She said that she is not very smart and so she needs to make sure her answer is good. She thought and thought for a long time and finally came up with an answer.
Kiku says that people don’t become more important when they die and his mother’s reaction must have been due to the shock she went through but that doesn’t give Mahiru the right to make her feel alone. She asks him if he loves his mother but he refuses, which makes Kiku think humans are stupid.
Kiku tells Mahiru that you can hate other people including your parents because they are other people in the end. But it’s exhausting to continue to hate people because it will hurt him in the long run and so he should probably reach the point of indifference. The rain stopped and Kiku started walking away when Mahiru tried to ask her name but Kiku mocked him for trying to pick up the girls.
Kiku asks Mahiru to ask her name when he has grown into a good young man. Then the focus shifts to Kiku and Mahiru lying on the beach that are slowly disintegrating when Mahiru asks her if she is happy and she says yes, then they both go up in smoke. Kou witnessed this even from afar.
