The Netflix series Gamera: Rebirth features a giant turtle protagonist battling five opponents, and one of these enemies is Zigra, a kaiju hybrid between a ray and a shark.
The Twitter account Gamera: Rebirth posted a photo of Zigra’s silhouette along with a description explaining that the underwater kaiju is a monster that moves underwater at super high speed. Zigra in the artwork looks much larger than he’s appeared in the past, alluding to the sheer scale of the upcoming fights in the Netflix series.
Who is Zigra?
Zigra first appeared in the movie Gamera vs. Zigra in 1971, the seventh installment in Daiei Film’s Gamera series. The film shows the Zigra as an alien fish that travels to Earth and tries to enslave its inhabitants. Zigra possesses a variety of powers, including both terrestrial and marine, multicolored beams that emanate from his head and cause explosions and earthquakes, as well as a super sharp dorsal fin. Despite these impressive abilities, Gamera thwarted Zigra’s plans, freed his human hostages, and defeated his enemies with a fiery breath.
In the 1980 film Gamera Super Monster, Zigra reappears in historical scenes. The kaiju fish never returned in subsequent Gamera films, but Zigra did appear in Issues 3 and 4 of Dark Horse Comics’ Gamera: The Guardian of the Universe comic book series.
In addition to Zigra, Gyaos and Jiger have also been revealed as enemies in Gamera Rebirth. Gyaos is a winged kaiju considered by many to be Gamera’s arch-enemy due to his numerous appearances in the Gamera series. Meanwhile, Jiger is a horned reptilian kaiju, as scarce as Zigra, and only appearing in Gamera vs. Jiger in 1970 and in the original Gamera Super Monster footage.
Gamera: Rebirth marks Gamera’s triumphant return nearly two decades after Gamera the Brave was released in 2006, and promises to restore Daiei’s most famous kaiju work to prominence alongside the audience. his more famous player, Godzilla. The six-episode series – the first fully animated Gamera production – will stream globally on Netflix later this year and is directed by Hiroyuki Seshita, who has co-directed three Godzilla animated films for Netflix: Planet of the Monsters in 2017 and City on the Monsters in 2018. Edge of Battle and Planet Eater. Gamera: Rebirth released its first trailer earlier this year, in January.
