“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”
The global box office revenue of “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” was only $168 million, while the production budget of the film was also $168 million, not including promotional costs. This is considered a tragic result for the return of director George Miller.
“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is a prequel to “Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)”, revolving around the younger days of the eponymous female warrior (played by Anya Taylor-Joy). Although it was highly appreciated by critics, with a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a B+ on CinemaScore, the film had difficulty reaching a wide audience.
According to Variety, one of the reasons for the poor box office performance of “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is that the prequel’s ending is the beginning of the original film, leading to a lack of interest from audiences. The film is also not as action-packed as the original film, leaving audiences disappointed.
Many critics attribute the failure of “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” to the decline of Hollywood’s popular franchises. Spin-offs are no longer a viable option for producers when their budgets are large and they are not attractive enough to attract audiences to the theaters despite receiving many compliments on their quality.
IF (Imaginary Friends)
“IF” (Imaginary Friends) is a live-action and animated comedy film about imaginary friends written, directed and co-produced by John Krasinski. The film revolves around 12-year-old Bea, with the special ability to see everyone's imaginary friends.
“IF” has carefully invested effects, bringing a realistic and vivid feeling. The film's diverse settings, from dense forests to modern cities, create rich visuals for viewers. The film also has good music, with cheerful, clear melodies, contributing to the fun atmosphere of the film.
“IF” grossed $33 million in its opening weekend. To date, the film has grossed $106 million in North American theaters and $181 million worldwide. That’s pretty good for a live-action/animated hybrid. However, the film cost $110 million to produce, so “IF” needs to gross $275 million to break even during its theatrical run.
The Fall Guy
Despite receiving positive reviews from critics, “The Fall Guy” still received dismal revenue and had to leave theaters after just over 2 weeks of showing. With a production budget of more than 140 million USD, the film only earned a total of 171 million USD worldwide. The failure of “The Fall Guy” is said to be due to the subject matter that is not attractive to young audiences.
“The Fall Guy” brings together Ryan Gosling and director David Leitch, one of Hollywood’s top action directors in recent years. The film is based on the ABC television series of the same name that aired from 1981-1986 and starred Lee Majors, Douglas Barr and Heather Thomas. The film revolves around Colt Seavers, an unemployed stuntman who is recruited by his ex-girlfriend to star in a big-budget Hollywood action film.
Madame Web
“Madame Web” is an expansion of Marvel and Sony's “Spider-Man” universe, telling the story of Cassandra Webb, a famous character in the Spider-Man universe. Despite being blind, Cassandra Web possesses quite an impressive power when she can see the future.
The story of the film is set when Cassandra was young and working as a paramedic. During an accident, she suddenly unleashed her clairvoyant ability and saw the future. From there, Cassandra embarked on a new journey, discovering many secrets from the past and developing her own potential.
“Madame Web” was a disaster with a record low score of 13% on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience rating was only 55%. The film earned $100 million at the global box office, but the production budget was up to $80 million.
Critics say one of the reasons why “Madame Web” failed at the box office was because the main character of the film – Cassandra Webb (played by Dakota Johnson) had an inconsistent and boring personality. Actress Dakota Johnson also admitted that she was not surprised that “Madame Web” became a disaster on screen.
“Unfortunately, I'm not surprised that things turned out this bad. However, making this film was definitely an experience for me because I've never done anything like this before,” Dakota shared.
Argylle
“Argylle” was invested more than 200 million USD to produce with famous names such as director Matthew Vaughn, actors Bryce Dallas Howard, Henry Cavill, Bryan Cranston, Samuel L. Jackson, … However, the film earned a disappointing number, only 96 million USD in revenue worldwide. According to Variety, it is estimated that Argylle must reach a revenue of at least 500 million USD to break even.
“Argylle” tells the story of female author Elly Conway who is writing a best-selling series revolving around the spy Argylle. However, Elly's stories quickly “merge” with the real world, and her mission is to, together with her pet cat Alfie, blur the line between reality and fantasy, helping the series have a proper ending without affecting the outside world.
On Rotten Tomatoes, “Argylle” is not highly rated despite having a potential cast, including the main actor Henry Cavill. TheWrap believes that the film's cast is the factor that “saved” the audience from watching the entire 2-hour-long film. The lack of chemistry between the main actors after going through many events together is also one of the minus points of “Argylle”.
