Since it started airing weekly on Netflix Starting on July 5, the new romantic anime My Happy Marriage has resonated. Based on Akumi Agitogi’s light novel series, it was adapted into a manga and even a live-action film before the Netflix project was announced. The series has been a fan favorite during the summer 2023 anime season and that’s for good reason for the quality of the series.
The anime adaptation, produced by Kinema Citrus, tells the story of Miyo Saimori, who lives with a scolding family in the 19th century Meiji Restoration – Japan. When it was time for Miyo to get married, she was taken to the house of the wealthy and cold-looking Kiyoka Kudou. But things don’t go Miyo’s plan. While she is destined for more trials and tribulations, she will also soon have a truly happy marriage as the title promises.
The beginning and the end of my happy marriage are both great
Seasoned anime fans know that, in the span of a typical 22-minute episode, three minutes containing OP and ED is crucial. The opening and ending of My Happy Marriage is almost impossible to skip. The opening track, “Anata no Soba ni,” performed by Riria, sounds as mellow and lovely as a J-Pop ballad. Kashitaro Ito’s ending song, “Vita Philosophica”, starts off softly and then climbs higher, while on screen the happy couple watch the sunset together. In other words, the songs are the perfect ending to every episode.
9 My Happy Marriage Animation is breathtaking
Kinema Citrus does not overlook the beautiful shots and close-ups of the characters in this adaptation. This is sure to please fans of Tsukiho Tsukioka’s beautiful and eye-catching graphics from the original light novel. Fans of the Heaven Official’s Blessing anime will love the pale pink and blue tones, as well as the sheer amount of detail put into each frame. It’s been a pleasure to find a show where so much love and care has been put into the animation. The right attention to detail can lead to some of the best cartoons of all time, and My Happy Marriage is no exception.
8 My Happy Marriage Is A Perfect Shoujo Story For Everyone
While Shoujo is generally made for a young female audience, most good Shoujo series will appeal to audiences far beyond its core demographic. In fact, the genre’s focus on romantic and personal relationships makes it ideal for any audience that loves a good story. This series will resonate with fans of hit Shoujo series like Fruits Basket, especially. Since that series hasn’t been active since ending the anime in 2021, My Happy Marriage is a perfect alternative for fans of Shoujo as well as romance.
7. Miyo’s sister Kaya is extremely annoying
What would this Cinderella story be without an evil step-sister (or half-sister in this case)? Kaya Saimori is spoiled, snobby and agrees with Miyo because she knows she can get away with it. However, despite this superficial appearance, she is a surprisingly complex character, driven by both envy and entitlement. The My Happy Marriage anime is now half way through, and it’s too early to know how much more Kaya’s inner fans will get. Either way, Kaya is as enjoyable to hate as Miyo to love.
6 Miyo is an empathetic protagonist
Newcomers to My Happy Marriage may be shocked to see how badly Miyo’s family treats her for superficial reasons. It was especially heartbreaking because Miyo was a kind young woman. She is soft-spoken and apologetic, although the latter is the result of living so long with family members who have looked down on her. Watching Miyo learn to accept love from others, such as her servant Yurie and Kiyoka Kudou herself, is an incredibly rewarding and emotional experience. Miyo’s kind heart and bad initial circumstances make her such an easy heroine.
5. Feeling complicated Kudou
Miyo’s new husband, Kiyoka, feels like a character straight out of a Jane Austen novel. At first, Kiyoka was reserved and aloof, much to the disgust of past fiancés. In fact, he is slow to trust others due to an innate understanding of their motives as viewers may assume that other women are only chasing after his power and wealth. As Miyo and viewers get to know him, it becomes clear that Kiyoka is really intuitive and kind, making him the perfect subject for the tight-lipped Miyo. After all, he had noticed signs of abuse in her upbringing and was trying to help her gain confidence, even when others turned a blind eye.
4 Comedies My Happy Marriage
While My Happy Marriage certainly deals with difficult topics, there are enough fun moments to relieve the stress. These are most notable from Kiyoka’s friend and subordinate, Yoshito Godo, who has a secret crush on Miyo. There’s a lot of banter between Godo and his boss, there’s even an angry moment in Episode 5 when Kiyoka calls him a “rat bastard” for all his promiscuity. Given how serious the theme of My Happy Marriage is, these lighthearted moments are crucial to making the series as accessible as it is.
3 My Happy Marriage’s English dub is as good as the spin-off
Some anime purists will only watch one series in Japanese, but this series is well worth watching in English. Miranda Parkin delivers Miyo’s lines gently but in a dry voice, the perfect balance for someone playing the role of a recovering abuse victim. Damian Haas walks the same rope as Kiyoka, capturing the warmth inside his character even with his cold, even-paced expression. It’s important for the main couple of any romantic drama to show the emotional core of their characters, and the English dub of My Happy Marriage goes above and beyond with Miyo and Kiyoka.
2 My Happy Marriage is a healthy series despite its theme
While it’s admittedly past the halfway point of the season fairly early for viewers to form strong opinions, the general consensus is that the series is as sane as one might expect. The fan communities on MyAnimeList and Reddit are flooded with reviews claiming that although there will be many tears, they will be happy people. There have been so many trials and tribulations in the real world, making the romance of My Happy Marriage a breath of fresh air. As surprising as it may seem because it has a prominent theme of abuse, My Happy Marriage may just be the healthiest anime romance Summer of 2023.
