Warning: The following content contains spoilers for the manga Jujutsu Kaisen!!!
Jujutsu Kaisen is truly the next generation of Shōnen series, redefining the genre and bringing something different. Gege Akutami has carefully crafted each character in the story, and the return of Nobara Kugisaki is a testament to the author's storytelling talent. Characters like Gojo Satoru, Yuta Okkotsu and the series' main protagonist are the main reasons for its huge success.
While Jujutsu Kaisen brought a unique twist to the Shōnen genre by unexpectedly killing off characters and portraying them in unique ways, it also missed the opportunity to fully explore and develop characters that could have had a significant impact on the story. Some characters were killed off early, while others were written in ways that failed to resonate with the audience, despite their potential. In doing so, Jujutsu Kaisen missed the opportunity to capitalize on the untapped potential of these characters.
10 Kasumi sticks
Despite its lack of power, Jujutsu Kaisen may teach fans a life lesson with Miwa
With Kasumi Miwa, Jujutsu Kaisen adds to the controversy surrounding female characters, despite Miwa's hidden potential. Miwa, who has no innate curse skills, works tirelessly to reach the level of being able to exorcise evil spirits and master the Simple Domain technique. Her character has the potential to convey a powerful message—that mastering one skill can be more valuable than being a jack of all trades.
Miwa can be described as a hero who saves people.including her friends, through her mastery of Simple Domain. Instead, like Haibara, Miwa's character is primarily used to emphasize the harsh realities of the wizarding world, ultimately casting aside a character with great potential.
9 Utahime Iori
Jujutsu Kaisen's Most Perfect Side Character Has Another Potential
There's no denying that Utahime Iori is a supporting character in Jujutsu Kaisen, as evidenced by her innate cursed technique. Utahime's ability to increase a witch's cursed energy by up to 120% has proven invaluable. Most notably when she allowed Gojo to fire Hollow Purple at 200% power during the battle with the King of Curses.
While her abilities are put to good use, the series missed the opportunity to explore her potential as a romantic interest for Gojo—a pairing that Jujutsu Kaisen fans have speculated about. While the series focuses on intense action, introducing a romantic subplot could have added some variety to the story, with Gojo and Utahime being the ideal pairing to fill that role.
8 Toge Inumaki
The Curse User Curse Curse Curse is Much Stronger Than He Describes
While Jujutsu Kaisen has many characters with unique cursed techniques, none stand out like Inumaki. The mage can influence anyone to do anything just by giving them a command, making it difficult to imagine a more powerful technique. Therefore, to balance such overwhelming power, it seems that Akutami has put in place some restrictions and protocols to control Inumaki's cursed technique.
While Inumaki rarely gets much attention in the main Jujutsu Kaisen anime, he gets more time to shine in Jujutsu Kaisen 0.
If it weren't for the conveniently placed limitations that prevented Inumaki from being the strongest character in Jujutsu Kaisen, his true potential might have been fully realized. Additionally, as the series progressed and the focus increasingly shifted to the main characters, Inumaki was pushed aside, despite the fact that his abilities could have made him an important asset in later Jujutsu Kaisen installments.
7 Uraume
The final villain of the series along with Kenjaku and Sukuna proves to be worthless.
Jujutsu Kaisen has many opportunities to expand the short story, with the Uraume's involvement in the series, especially their relationship with Sukuna, being one such missed opportunity. Unlike Jogo, Uramue has no compelling reason for their loyalty to the King of Curses. The series may delve into Uraume's previous interactions with Sukuna during the Heian period.providing a richer backstory and more compelling motivation for their loyalty.
Additionally, her involvement in the final battle of Jujutsu Kaisen proved invaluable as her belief in following Sukuna, underscoring the series' tendency to ignore potential stories it could have explored, especially with characters whose depth and motivations remain largely untapped.
6 Yui Haibara
A character that could enrich the character development of Geto and Nanami
Gege Akutami has never been shy about killing characters, and while fans have accepted this, no one expected Yui Haibara's death to be so sudden. Haibara's death is the beginning of Geto's fall into crime. While it could be argued that his death was meant to reflect the harsh realities of the Jujutsu martial arts world, the series could have capitalized on this character and expanded upon it further.
In doing so, the series could have provided a longer story, countering the frequent complaints from fans about its brevity. Ultimately, his longer involvement and subsequent death could have significantly deepened the character development of Geto and Nanami, especially considering the important choices they made after Haibara's loss.
5 Pandas
Panda's Third Form's Potential Remains Untapped
A second-year student at Tokyo Jujutsu High School, Panda definitely stands out as one of the more unique characters in the series due to his appearance. However, the series also reveals that Panda has two more transformation forms, with his Gorilla form being fully explored and his limitations clearly defined. But Panda's third transformation remains a mystery, as the series has never been interested in exploring its true powers.I.
When Panda transforms into his “sister” core, he takes on a slender, feminine appearance, with a head resembling that of a massive Triceratops. Although Panda has hinted that this form can be extremely destructive, his emphasis on his sister’s timidity leads to the destruction of others, leaving his true abilities unexplored. This transformation remains one of the remaining mysteries in Jujutsu Kaisen.
4 games
Jogo's power is hidden due to his unpredictable matches.
The Volcanic Cursed Spirit was introduced as one of the series' starting antagonists, with the implication that he would remain the main antagonist until the end. However, the series turned his character into a running gag. In the two major battles Jogo participated in, he faced off against two of the most powerful mages in existence: first Gojo, and then Sukuna. These fights unfairly portrayed Jogo as a weak villain.
However, in reality, Jogo single-handedly defeated two level 1 mages.Kento Nanami and Naobito Zenin, even leading to the death of this character. Jogo's ultimate goal is clear: to revive Sukuna and bring back the era of cursed souls. If he had not been killed in the fight against the King of Curses, Jogo would have played a key role in supporting Sukuna and would have posed a significant challenge to the mages in the final battle.
3 Nobara Kugisaki
Jujutsu Kaisen also missed the opportunity to introduce an original female character.
While Jujutsu Kaisen stands out in many ways within the shōnen genre, it ultimately shares a common thread with Naruto in having three main characters: two males and one female. Nobara Kugisaki, the female lead, unfortunately follows the familiar pattern of being sidelined. Worse yet, Nobara is absent for over half of the series. Her ambiguous fate during the Shibuya arc, which kept her from appearing in the plot until chapter 267, near the end of the series, left many fans disappointed.
Her sudden appearance, after fans had already accepted her death, not only disrupts the plot, but also undermines Nobara's character development. If Jujutsu Kaisen continued to feature Nobara after the Shibuya arc, allowing her to prepare for the final battle and potentially become one of the strongest female characters in the process, the series could seize the opportunity to introduce a strong, primal female character who isn't marginalized, breaking the mold of shonen series.
2 Toji Zenin
Toji's anti-hero role would make Jujutsu Kaisen more interesting
The depiction of Toji Zenin in Jujutsu Kaisen is fascinating, as he stands out as uniquely Gojo Satoru in the series. While Gojo was born with abundant magical power, Toji is the opposite—a man without the cursed energy. His uniqueness could have broken the life cycle of cursed spirits and magicians. However, instead of being explored as a force for change, Toji is primarily portrayed as an antagonist. However, his brief return during the Shibuya Incident turns him into an anti-hero.
This was another missed opportunity that Jujutsu Kaisen could have capitalized on. The return of the anti-hero Toji could have been extended, making the story more interesting. He may have trained Maki, given their similar circumstances, which would provide a more satisfying explanation for her sudden transformation. Additionally, developing the relationship between Toji and Megumi could create one of the most profound and emotional storylines in the series.
1 Kenjaku
Mysterious Villain May Have Aided in the Discovery of the Heian Period
As Jujutsu Kaisen comes to an end, it seems like the series will not delve into the Heian period, which is often considered the golden age of Jujutsu. This is a missed opportunity, especially since fans have been looking forward to exploring this fascinating period. Kenjaku, who has lived for thousands of years, would be the perfect character to explore this era. His perspective could provide deeper insights into the Heian period and allow for a deeper exploration of his complex motivations.
Kenjaku was killed abruptly, leaving the true motives behind his complex plans largely unexplored. Delving into the Heian period through Kenjaku's eyes could provide a foundation for understanding his intentions and ambitions. Additionally, Jujutsu Kaisen missed the opportunity to showcase Kenjaku's hidden power, which many fans believe could rival Sukuna's..
