10 Eureka Seven
Eureka Seven is a 2005 science fiction/mecha anime about Renton Thurston, a boy with dreams of adventure who gets caught up in a resistance group called Gekkostate. It deals with the conflict between humans and beings known as the Scub Coral, aliens who one day come from space and threaten to make the Earth uninhabitable… or so it seems. So. Renton is thrust into this conflict due to his connection to a mysterious mechanic pilot named Eureka, who may have some connection to Coral. A great mystery is beginning to be unraveled, and it is a mystery that depends on the budding love story between Renton and Eureka, the outcome of which could change everything.
9 Carole & Tuesday
Carole & Tuesday is a series based on the 2019 music of Cowboy Bebop’s Shinichiro Watanabe, and actually shares a universe with the classic series. Carole is an impoverished refugee from Earth who came to Mars to make a fresh start, while Tuesday comes from a wealthy family with political connections who chose to throw it all away and try to be a musician. The pair met and found that Tuesday’s guitar playing matched Carole’s keyboard very well, and thus a musical duo was born. This movie is a must-see for all music lovers, and it’s a pretty peaceful movie compared to most on this list.
8 Darker than Black
Darker than Black is a 2007 series about a world where a mysterious structure known as Heaven’s Gate (and its corresponding Hell’s Gate) spontaneously appeared one day, causing some nearby develops the mysterious “Bidder” power – a superpower that acquires a price that varies from person to person. The film is about Hei, a Contractor working for China who acts as a spy, while trying to find out what happened to his sister who died many years ago. Darker than Black holding their strengths and weaknesses is an interesting one, although the show can be a bit harsh at times (as the name suggests).
7 Soul Eaters
Soul Eater is a 2008-2009 fantasy series adapted from the manga of the same name by Atsushi Ohkubo. The series follows Maka Albarn, a Shinigami in training, and her partner, Soul Eater, who has the ability to transform into a weapon. Both attended a school called Death-Weapon Meister Academy, where those with the ability to transform into weapons trained with the “Meisters” who would wield them. Unfortunately, the Soul Eater manga was not completed at the time and the anime had to come up with its own ending, which was controversial among fans. However, the series is extremely enjoyable and full of lively characters.
The original 2003 Fullmetal Alchemist was an adaptation of the manga of the same name, but only in part; like Soul Eater, it had to have its own ending, and in doing so became a very different story from the manga, despite sharing the same characters. Following Edward Elric and his brother Alphonse, who have lost most of their bodies in a failed attempt to revive their mother, the film follows an adventure unlike any other. The 2003 series is still loved by many, and although different, the story it tells is almost as good as the comics.

A 2016 supernatural action series, Bungo Stray Dogs has the uncanny premise of returning famous authors and poets to their supernatural powers as teenagers. The story follows Atsushi Nakajima, an orphan with the uncanny ability to transform into a white tiger under the moonlight. After rescuing a suicidal detective, Atsushi finds himself the target of underworld leaders who want his tiger powers as part of a larger plot to change the fabric of reality. . A wild and exotic ride along the way, Bungo Stray Dogs won critical acclaim upon its debut and has remained popular ever since.

Starting in 2016, Mob Psycho 100 is an adaptation of the webcomic of the same name by ONE, also the author of One-Punch Man. Shigeo Kageyama, AKA Mob, has extraordinary superpowers, but all he really wants is to live an ordinary life. To try to capture his powers, he comes under the auspices of Reigen Arataka, a phony psychic who runs a business dealing in exorcisms and other psychic phenomena. Mob Psycho 100 is known for both its humor and intense action, often accompanied by hilarious visuals that help make the series so memorable.

Another series by Shinichiro Watanabe, Space Dandy is considered a secret sequel to Cowboy Bebop with a twist. This 2014 animated film takes the basic premise of Bebop – a group of bounty hunters who regularly go bust in space – and is full of humor with it. While Space Dandy is usually hilarious, the show has surprisingly depth, with poignant episodes that sometimes contrast with the often-dominant madness. Space Dandy is also fascinating in that the different episodes are done in different artistic styles, resulting in some very striking visuals that fit each story being told.

My Hero Academia started in 2016, a great year for Bones and quickly became one of the most popular anime series in the world. In a world where the vast majority of people have some sort of special ability called a Quirk, Izuku “Deku” Midoriya is one of those rare people who don’t. Despite this, Midoriya hopes to one day become a great hero, and in order to prove his bravery to the top hero All Might, he was given the chance to inherit All Might’s power, finally give you the key you need to succeed. My Hero Academia is known for its compelling villains and likable characters, while bringing something new to the already tired superhero genre in a way that only anime can.
In 2009 and 2010, Bones released another Fullmetal Alchemist adaptation, this time closely following the manga, which was almost complete at the time. While many of the same voice actors have returned from the first series, this is by no means a sequel. Instead, it’s an alternate narrative, delving into aspects of the plot that weren’t written in 2003 when the first series aired. Many fans value Brotherhood more seriously, and with the new characters and brilliantly executed plot, it’s not hard to see why. Both versions are worth a look, but Brotherhood is the one to choose if you only have to pick one.
